From "Egyptian State" to "Egyptian Sequence." The exhibition generated a tremendous response at the time, as it resonated with an "Egyptian sensibility" that many felt was missing amidst the pressures of daily life—and the myriad influences now intersecting with our relationship to place, memory, and identity. A year later, we return to essentially the same concept, but under a different title: "Egyptian Sequence." The term is borrowed from musical composition, embodying the idea of multiplicity or variety—all centered on a single, shared feeling: the essence of being Egyptian. The new exhibition expands its roster to include 17 artists—all seasoned in expressing the Egyptian spirit. They offer simple yet evocative responses to profound, complex questions regarding identity and Egyptian culture. Each artist approaches these answers through their own personal sense of "Egyptian-ness," drawing upon their unique experiences and visual language. For Egypt—as I noted yesterday—is a long history of accumulated details, people, places, customs, symbols, and memories; elements that have perhaps shaped what we often like to call the "Egyptian sensibility." The key point is that this event is only complete with an audience; therefore, everyone is invited to attend the opening next Tuesday at the "Demy" Gallery at 7:00 PM.
